The most north-easterly of the Canaries, Lanzarote is a dry and fairly flat island whose bizarre landscape has been shaped by volcanic activity – barren lava fields, craters and Fire Mountain itself (in the Timanfaya National Park) where heat still radiates from just beneath the surface. UNESCO declared the whole island a Biosphere Reserve in 1993, and visitors exploring the dozens of enchanting spots on the island will soon see why. Do visit the National Park as it’s the nearest thing on Earth to the moons barren surface. The main holiday resort is Puerto del Carmen and is for holidaymakers who like beaches, nightlife and bars in abundant supply and easily accessible. Popular with teenagers, though not a "lager lout" resort. A quieter neighbour is either Playa de los Pocillos or Matagorda which are more family friendly resorts yet still close enough for those who enjoy a livelier nightlife. The other main resorts on Lanzarote are Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca are both better suited to holidaymaker looking for a nice beach holiday but without too much nightlife.

Timanfaya National Park or Parque Nacional de Timanfaya is a 'must see' for any tourist visiting Lanzarote. Your hotel can arrange a coach trip but if there are a few in your party then it may be cheaper to hire a car. The volcano last erupted in 1736 but still some underground activity continues as the surface temperature in the core ranges from 100 to 600 °C at the depth of 13 metres, which is demonstrated by pouring water into the ground, resulting in a geyser of steam which is an attraction for tourists. There's a nice restaurant in the center of the park where you can order a steak which is barbequed on the heat rising from core of the volcano. There are also camel rides and tours around the various craters.

Rancho Texas Park: Like the National Park this must be on every families 'must do' list. There are various shows to see throughout the day and no show will start when another is going on so you never miss any part of a show. There are so many unusual animals to see and most tourist favourite are the white tigers followed closely by the baby pumas. There are bird and reptile shows which are amazing and very educational. Shows start at 10:30 so get there early (the park opens at 9:30) if you want to see everything.
